BAY – Croaker have arrived inside the bay and some of the tributaries. Buckroe Beach Pier is reporting an increasing bite, the James River Bridge area has also been good. Some Green Top customers have reported some inside the York River. Bloodworms, Squid, and Shrimp are all working. More anglers are targeting Flounder inside the bay also. The HRBT area is good currently, and inlets like Lynnhaven and Back River are producing keepers also. The CBBT has reportedly given up a few Flounder lately. Puppy Drum are numerous throughout the bay’s many tributaries like Lynnhaven Inlet, Mobjack Bay, and Back River. Speckled Trout are on many anglers’ minds as May approaches. May is typically a big fish month for Specks. A wide range of offering can be used now, including topwater presentations. Live bait, Gulp! baits, swim tail grubs such as sea shads, and fluke baits will all take fish right now. The Tautog bite is still alive inside the bay, but the season closes May 1st.
OCEAN – Big catches of Red Drum are starting to emerge from the seaside of the Eastern Shore. Fisherman’s Island is a traditional are that always seems to produce. Fresh cut bait and crabs are a favorite of these brutes. The seaside of the Eastern Shore has also been a traditional are for early season Flounder. A little farther north in Oyster and Wachaupreque is where better results are coming from. Drifting minnows has been best. Deep dropping is also an option for some excellent table fare. FRESH – Shad fishing on the James is still going strong, along with the White Perch. Live and cut bait is good for the Perch, and spoons, darts, and flies continue to fool plenty of shad. Huge Blue Cats continue to stretch lines throughout the lower James and other tidal rivers in the area. Bass fishing is very good now on the James and Chick as they begin to set up to spawn. A wide range of lures can be used now as they are quite aggressive. Buzzbaits and spinnerbaits are especially good. The upper James is in good shape for Smallmouth fishing, as they too are preparing to spawn. The Potomac River Largemouth bite is also very good now. Pitching soft plastics is probably most popular, but chatterbaits and jigs should be tied on as well. Most lakes in the area are the proper temps for spawning for spawning Bass.
