Chesapeake Bay & Ocean- The speckled Trout bite is still the hottest bite inside the bay. Folks are catching trophy fish inside the Elizabeth River and inside the James River. Many are using shiners under floats, while those preferring artificials are having the best luck with Mirr-o-lures and Jerkbaits. Tautog are still available on Bay structures, which offered a good alternative during the poor Rockfish season inside the bay. However, some new reports have Rockfish inside the 3 mile limit. The Rockfish Shootout should prove interesting as it starts on Thursday the 9th and ends on Sunday the 12th. Deep dropping is a god option when weather conditions are favorable. Blueline Tilefish is the most common catch while deep dropping.
Freshwater- The river level of the James is currently 6.27: still a bit high, but this weekend could have it at a favorable level, however water temps could be unfavorable. Blue cats are good option now in the lower James, Chick, and other tidal rivers. 15+ plus lbs won last weekend’s Winter Tournament on Lake Anna on the 5th. Anglers continue to catch Bass on Jigs, swim baits, jerk baits, and metal blade baits such as silver buddies. The Stripers seem to be moving downlake toward Power plant Stripers at Gaston are being found inside Peatlill Creek and down toward the dam.
