CHESAPEAKE BAY – The second half of the bay Rockfish season opened May 16th. The minimum size is 18” and maximum size is 28”. 2 fish per angler is the limit, however 1 fish kept may be over 32”. Fish over 32” must be reported to the Va. Saltwater Journal. Anglers continue to catch Rockfish in all of Va’s tributaries of the bay. Weekly Fishing Report
BAY – Croaker have arrived inside the bay and some of the tributaries. Buckroe Beach Pier is reporting an increasing bite, the James River Bridge area has also been good. Some Green Top customers have reported some inside the York River. Bloodworms, Squid, and Shrimp are all working. More anglers are targeting Flounder inside the bay also. The HRBT area is good currently, and inlets like Lynnhaven and Back River are producing keepers also. The CBBT has reportedly given up a few Flounder lately. Richmond’s Spring Fishing on the Fly
For the fly angler, spring is almost too good in central Virginia.
With so many excellent fishing options, time available to spend on the water is the only constraint. In the interest of brevity, I will stick to the fishing right around my home in Richmond.

BAY- The Flounder bite is red hot throughout the bay right now. Anglers are catching them at Buoy 42, The Cell, Back River Reef, the islands and pilings of the CBBT, and many other places. Traditional Flounder rigs with strip baits, live bait rigs, and jigs adorned with Gulp! baits or strip bait are all effective.
