CHESAPEAKE BAY – Flounder action is definitely improving as warm weather increases, as does the number of anglers seeking them. Live baiters are faring better right now with Gudgeons and Silversides. Lower bay structures are starting to produce, but shallow areas are attracting more fish. Speckled Trout anglers are also seeing better shallow action inside areas like Mobjack Bay, The Rappahannock River, Back River, and Lynnhaven Inlet. Richmond’s Spring Fishing on the Fly
For the fly angler, spring is almost too good in central Virginia.
With so many excellent fishing options, time available to spend on the water is the only constraint. In the interest of brevity, I will stick to the fishing right around my home in Richmond.

Fishing Kerr Lake 3-23-13
While on a search mission for the next day’s tournament on Kerr Lake, my partner and I were greeted by light S-SW winds as w launched at County Line Park in the Nutbush Creek area. Water temps were hovering around 46 deg. as we targeted secondary points with jerk baits and crank baits. We had a few short strikes on shallow jerks over deeper water, so we decided to move to shallower water. BAY- The Flounder bite is red hot throughout the bay right now. Anglers are catching them at Buoy 42, The Cell, Back River Reef, the islands and pilings of the CBBT, and many other places. Traditional Flounder rigs with strip baits, live bait rigs, and jigs adorned with Gulp! baits or strip bait are all effective. We haven’t heard of many trophy sized fish, but many nice sized fish are being had daily. Spadefish are quite numerous at the Cell, as are anglers targeting them.
